Becoming a mover

Most movement advice starts with a program. Three sets of ten, three times a week. That assumes you can already do the movement, and often we can't.

This morning starts somewhere else, with identity rather than instruction. A mover is someone who moves through the day, looks for the chance to, and stays capable in ordinary life. Able for themselves, and able for the people around them. Not an athlete, not a weekend warrior.

That shift changes what you do when nobody is teaching you. Someone who thinks of themselves as a mover takes the stairs because they are there, not because it was scheduled.

The wisdom talk

Brian Betancourt is Director of Curriculum and Performance at MovNat. He has spent years teaching people to move in ways they can sustain, in the places they actually live rather than in a gym.

His talk covers what most advice skips. Why capability comes before any program. How to choose an approach you can keep for life, that works anywhere, builds real ability, and keeps you away from injury. Why thirty minutes of exercise against twenty three sedentary hours is not enough on its own. And how to distribute movement through an ordinary working day without losing the focus your work needs.

No screens, no slides.

The shape of the morning

We begin at 9:30 with time to arrive properly. Water, cold lavender tea, something to eat. Phones off and away.

At ten we open with a somatic practice, movement first to shake loose the outside world, then stillness to gather the room. The wisdom talk follows, then an open conversation where people bring their own questions.

At noon we eat. The meal is prepared with Grove Grocer and served family style, passed around the table. It is the least structured part of the day and often the best. We finish at one.

What you take home

A printed sheet built for the theme, yours to adapt and keep using. A card carrying the notes from the talk, ways to continue, and Brian's own details, so the morning does not end when you leave.

Your place also includes your next three community events, our lighter gatherings in nature and public spaces.

Who this is for

People who suspect that movement should be part of a life rather than an appointment in it. You do not need to be fit, flexible, or experienced. Everything in the somatic practice can be adapted, and nobody is watched or corrected.

Before you come

Wear something you can move in. Arrive by 9:30 so we can start together. Phones stay off rather than silent, and we ask people to come without added scent, since the room is small and shared.

Let us know about any dietary needs when you register. The address is shared once your place is confirmed.
