Journeywise 01: The Art and Science of Sleep
This gathering is over but please visit our resource page to see a variety of offerings relevant to sleep.
Journeywise gatherings are spaces where people can come together to learn, grow, and joyfully connect. Each gathering features three elements: a wisdom talk (with a different theme each month) an enriching activity, and a nourishing meal.
Our launch topic focuses on sleep, a primal need that is considered to be the foundation of healthy living. Or, as beautifully expressed by Matthew Walker (a sleep scientist and poet), sleep is the “most powerful elixir of wellness and vitality, dispensed through every conceivable biological pathway.”
Wisdom Talk: The Art & Science of Sleep
Cassandra Carlopio, our wisdom guide for the day’s gathering, will provide us with an overview of the current state of sleep. The talk will present a range of topics, including the importance of sleep, the role of the nervous system as it relates to sleep, and the psyche’s impact on sleep. She will also cover sleep essentials and provide participants with techniques that can help the body relax into a deep and restorative slumber.
Bio: Cassandra is a licensed Psychologist in Australia who teaches mindfulness meditation and yoga nidra in Southern California. She is a collaborative partner at The Breathe Institute, a leading organization in functional sleep medicine. She’s consulted for Major League soccer teams, the National Hockey League, and medical professionals. She completed her Masters Degree in Clinical Psychology from Bond University in Australia in 2012. Most recently she became a Journeywise wisdom guide.
Enriching Activity: Deep Relaxation Experience
The Deep Relaxation Experience is a guided meditation that invites the listener to pause, turn inward, and shift the body into a deeply relaxed and renewing state. Participants will be invited to sit or lay down, close their eyes, and follow the verbal guidance. Deep relaxation is a skill that can be learned, honed and practiced.
Nourishing Meal
Chef Kyle Knies, our culinary guide, will serve a nourishing plant-based meal that is local, seasonal, and prepared with love!
Bio: Kyle discovered his passion for cooking while studying film in Paris; learning to cook on a hot plate in an old maid’s quarters, taking inspiration from the produce & spice markets around the city. He then fine-tuned his craft working at various restaurants, taking a culinary journey through South India, and studying bio-intensive farming in Sonoma County. Kyle’s goal is to create dishes with international flavors & inventive presentations, all made from the freshest local & organic ingredients.
